Railway Celebrates With Top Fictional Detective

With that distinctive hat and pipe, people on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway could not mistake Sherlock Holmes on Sunday.

He and his trusty sidekick Dr Watson visited stations on the line to re-enact scenes from the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle which were originally filmed at the railway by Granada TV. The day was part of a series to celebrate the steam railway’s role in film and television.

Press Officer Julian Jones had previously offered a free day rover ticket to anyone bringing a blood-hound but no one obliged.

Howard Clough, of K&WVR, said: “We did wonder if we would be over-run.”

Another attraction was the 125-year-old Bellerophon steam locomotive – one of the oldest of its kind – which was offering rides with two vintage coaches. Mr Clough said: “Quite a few turned up in costume which is nice, and it’s an education to ride behind a steam locomotive when it’s so rare and in good condition.”

Sherlock Cracks Crime On Tracks

It’s full steam ahead for Sherlock Holmes buffs this weekend as they make tracks for the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, where drama group The Irregular Special Players will be recreating scenes from the famous books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

A frequent service of steam trains will operate on both days, with cameo scenes taking place between noon and 4pm tomorrow, and 10am and 2pm on Sunday.

A Day Rover ticket costs £8 (£4 for children 4-15 and the retired) and allows unlimited travel on the day and access to all the Holmes cameos.

Visitors are encouraged to enter into the spirit of things, and anyone who arrives wearing a deerstalker will be entitled to £1 off an adult full line or day ticket.

Event organiser Julian Jones said: “This is a special year for Holmes fans as it marks the centenary of the first publication of The Hound of the Baskervilles in The Strand Magazine.

“We look forward to welcoming sleuths young and old,” he added.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway was chosen by Granada TV when filming scenes for its Sherlock Holmes series starring the late Jeremy Brett.

Holmes Tracks Down Another Mystery

Legendary super sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his faithful sidekick Dr Watson made tracks for the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway at the weekend.

Drama group The Irregular Special Players recreated scenes from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous books for visitors to the five mile line.

The public was invited to enter into the spirit of the event by donning deerstalkers.

It was not the first time Sherlock Holmes had been spotted on the K&WVR – Granada TV used the railway to shoot scenes for its series starring the late Jeremy Brett.
